It was Pietro, the team's captain, who had communicated early that "Réti 3" had already achieved its season goal and that we could therefore free Massimo to play for Réti 2 and use the team to give new players a chance to face stronger opponents. This is what has happened this afternoon but how it finally ended up nobody would ever have expected:Facing players that were around 200 elo rating points stronger on each board we had nothing to loose and I have (acting as Pietro's deputy for once) communicated to the team that each draw and even each long fight would be a success for us this afternoon. And then things started: Grace - faced with a surprising and unpleasent piece sacrifice and a quite uncomfortable position - grasped her last chance and check-mated her opponent in one move, after he hadn't immediatly seen this threat and played his move a little bit too fast. In the meantime both Andreas and Giulio had produced promising positions and the afternoon was starting to get even more interesting than expected. Kari agreed to a draw a bit later on and also Alexandre who had given a rook for a bishop and a pawn was scaring his opponent with the bishop pair so much that the draw offer came from the other side of the board. Andreas was fighting the strongest player of the other team with the black pieces on board two. He did well in the opening, took over control in the center and had nice play but slowly the opponent started to recover from the opening, was gaining time and also free play. The game was starting to get tight. At the same time board three was starting to look nicer and nicer for Giulio who had realized that today it was his task to secure the team's win. A great centralized knight against a more then poor enemy bishop, an active rook and a material plus of a pawn with the threat of a second pawn win was the good-looking position that Giulio had on the board when his opponent finally decided to resign. The surprise was perfect and Andreas's defeat a bit later on was herewith much easier to digest. This was indeed a splendid afternoon for the team. The congratulation from my side goes to all five players that have contributed to a result which I would not even have dared to dream of.

Massimo Maffioli 1983 1:0 Albert Huguenin 1638
Karl Hunkeler 1841 ½:½ Magdy Megeid 1593
Christian Suter 1695 1:0 Peter Thurnheer 1617

We expected to have a stronger team than Wollishofen 4, and in fact the match started quite well for us: Pietro got a clear advantage (a rook for a knight) after few moves.  His opponent then tried to counter attack but Pietro’s defense was solid, and the match ended after two hours (1-0). In the meanwhile, after a weak opening (a gambit without a clear compensation for the given pawn), Christian got an advantage thanks to a dubious sacrifice of his opponent: the pseudo-passed pawn he obtained was not enough, and in the end Christian won the match (2-0). Otto’s match was quite equilibrate: he got the pair of bishop with an opposite castles. He tried to block the bishop of the opponent, but at the end the position was really solid on both sides and the match resulted in a draw (2,5-0,5). Massimo obtained a better development after the opening, but his opponent’s position was still solid. Thanks to the pressure of the time (he had less than 20 minutes to play more than 20 moves), his opponent has to rush during the middle game and he made some mistakes, loosing first a bishop and then the queen (3,5-0,5). Finally, Karl played until the end a really open match: he gave the rook for two free pawns, and, even though his opponent had a good position, he was able to bring his two pawns to the 6th and 7th rows obtaining a draw (4-1).

Pietro fällt ein Stein vom Herzen: „The match started quite well for us: Massimo’s opponent didn’t show up, and after half an hour we were already leading 1-0. The other 4 matches were quite uncertain during the first two hours of playing, but at the end Otto found the right combination to win his match against a really young and promising player. On 1st board, Pietro suffered quite a lot after the opening, and he had to give up after almost 4 hours (2-1). On the other hand, Sebastian, after quite a good game, arrived to an endgame bishop vs. knight + several pawns on both sides, and the match resulted in a draw (2.5-1.5). On the last board, Jon, after playing a defensive opening, was able to push back the attack of his opponent, reaching an endgame with bishops of opposite colors in which he was slightly better. This game ended in a draw as well (3-2).“
